Choices: UNESCO Heritage Site Motion Graphic

Project Details

For this project, I was given an array of choices to make with the prompt, “We run an adventure and cultural tourism company and offer many week-long tours of world heritage sites around the globe. Depending on the location we might be traveling on buses, jeeps, boats, kayaks or even hot-air balloons. We need some design help. Can you help?”

Choice one

Look at World Heritage Sites and select two that are near each other geographically so they can be visited in one tour.

I selected the World Heritage Sites of Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California (The Sea of Cortez) and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

The Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California is a world heritage site because it is among the world’s most ecologically intact ecosystems with the site containing 39% of the world’s total number of marine mammals and a third of the world’s marine cetacean species within its 1,837,194 hectares, of which about one quarter are terrestrial and the remainder marine.

For the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California (The Sea of Cortez) I found the diverse ecosystem an interesting visual to explore with many possibilities on how to approach the site. As a nature person, I was also drawn to more rural sites compared to cities or ancient ruins.

The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is recognized as an outstanding example of a natural phenomenon with UNESCO declaring the site’s universal value for both biology and conservation. Every autumn, millions of butterflies from wide areas of North America return to the site and cluster on small areas of the forest reserve, coloring its trees orange and bending branches under their collective weight.

The second location I selected, being the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, I was drawn to the phenomena of the monarch butterfly migration and immediately knew that I had to do it.

Choice two

Choose a deliverable to display your selected locations.

I chose the motion deliverable with AfterEffects to create a 10-15 second promotional video intended for display in airports. I used the programs: Illustrator, AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, and YouTube.
