Can
Titled Can, in turning an object’s function into that of another via change in form or intention, I wanted to create an enlarged cat food can for my cat to eat out of. On the surface, the function of the can remains the same as the object it is meant to hold food to eat out of. My object changes this function by enlarging the size of the can and incorporating the lid of the object, mimicking the action of the can being opened, leaving the inside half-accessible as it is slightly ajar. From the changes of the form, the function is then altered as the half-opened lid leads to an obstruction of being able to fully access the can. Being unable to have access to the full can removes the function of being able to eat out of it, at least without some difficulty.
I had a lot of fun bringing this piece to life with the usage of the slab-roller tool, something which took a lot of trial and error in which the clay was sometimes too dry, too thick, too thin, etc., and learning what worked best for this project and upscaling a rather small object into a bigger one.
Through the process of firing the piece, the kiln reached extremely high temperatures, changing the form of the object once more as the once open can folds over, sealing the lid with glaze, completely removing all function as an empty, closed, can to eat out of.
